Thesis
John Muir and his efforts to preserve the Yosemite Valley and other wild areas on the Pacific Seaboard convinced the general public and politicians in Washington that the wilderness needed to be protected and maintained. Muir's actions resulted in the National Park Service Organic Act of 1916, which gave the public and future generations the right to enjoy the nation's national parks. With that right came the responsibility for the National Park Service and the general public to protect and preserve the wild places in the United States.

God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand straining, leveling tempests and floods; but he cannot save them from fools —only 'Uncle Sam' can do that. -John Muir (American Trees) |
